Time Machine Bikes

Time Machine Bikes are a specialist used parts supplier, stocking parts from new and used MV Agusta, Ducati and Aprilia motorcycles. We stock all parts from engines to fuel pumps, including all the fasteners, brackets and mountings that hold it all together. All parts are considerably cheaper than new and, more importantly, are available here and now!

Steampunk Motorcycles

What if technology had taken a different path? What if the steam powered technology of the Victorian era had continued on to the present day, offering up the same devices we use but with the metal, gears and wheels prevalent in those early machines? That’s the idea behind steampunk, current day tech with a steam era look.

Harley Davidson 4 Valve Big Twin Sportbike

Digging around in some old images I came across this bike and I have zero information about it but as you can see, there’s something very interesting here. Housed in a custom sportbike frame is a Harley Davidson big twin, with 4 valve heads no less! There is some type of induction system with velocity stacks sticking up through the tank and beyond that, you know as much as I do, … or do you?

New Yamaha Vmax from Tokyo Motor Show

The advance ticket holders are already spewing out loads of photos from the Tokyo Motor Show, we hope to have some of our own shortly, but in the meantime, you might like to see these, a design study of a new (hold your breath!) Yamaha VMax! (Or is that a Star Vmax? yuk!) This was noted briefly on the Yamaha website but here are the photos.

Kettenkrad - the motorcycle tank

Yesterday’s post about the single tracked all terrain motorcycle designs reminded me of these WWII motorcycle tank hybrids. Very odd vehicles and I’m not really sure of the reasoning behind their construction, why the motorcycle front end was necessary isn’t clear, the one site says it’s for stability at high speeds and you actually could remove it in really rough terrain, but they do look interesting.

Goldwing Retriever

What happens when a car stalls in traffic on a busy highway? Instant traffic jam, naturally, but how does the tow truck get to the car if the highway is filled with cars? Suppose you had a small agile vehicle like a motorcycle that could also tow the car from where it was stuck? Enter The Retriever. It’s a Honda Goldwing with a foldable towing rig that rides through traffic like a normal motorcycle, splitting lanes and weaving through the jam until it arrives at the scene. Then it unfolds the towing rig, loads up the car and rolls away.

Hyanide and Baal - all terrain motorcycles

Both the Hyanide and Baal designs are based on a bendable rubber track. The vehicles are steered by both hands and feet. The concepts are capable of many different engine variations, these were designed to accept a 500cc ATV engine, the type which are already mass produced. The Baal concept was thought to be the sort of vehicle that could be used in the Paris-Dakar or Baja races.

Hyanide and Baal - all terrain motorcycles

Here’s some creative thinking for motorcycling off road, it’s a tracked motorcycle. Ready to do battle with sand, snow or anything else, the Hyanide and Baal design concepts are part of the Michelin Challenge Design 2006 that’s taking place at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Pulsejet Powered Bicycle

Feeling depressed because you can’t afford a turbine motorcycle? Don’t despair, you can have a pulsejet bicycle instead. It may not be quite as impressive but if you tell folks you have a jet bike without giving them too many details, they’ll think you’re a real rocketman.

Oldsmobile Quad 4 Motorcycle Project

Chris Fairbrother has an idea for an all new sportbike, something very fast and easy to maintain, that doesn’t have to rev high to produce major power; hence large displacement (2300cc).
Oldsmobile, with assistance from Jim Feuling, developed an engine in 1988, the 2.3 liter, iron-block, four-valve DOHC aluminum-head Quad 4, putting out about 180 horsepower and tunable for much more. It was a popular race engine in the early 1990s and AJ Foyt had one up to 266 mph. Chris thought, hmm … sounds like a Quad 4 might do it.

Radial Engine Powered Motorcycle

One of our readers sent us this photo of a motorcycle powered by a 7 cylinder radial engine! We have no details of where this is from or who built it. If any of you have seen this or know more about it, please let us know. Several motorcycle builders, including Confederate, say they are using a radial engine when what they have is simply a two cylinder slice. This bike uses the whole thing! Incredible.

Thunder Star 1200 Diesel by Star Twin

Stop the presses! er… stop the keyboards, I love this! Star Twin, a company over in Holland, has designed and built the Thunder Star 1200 TDI Sportbike. This is a 1200cc, three cylinder turbocharged direct injection diesel. They started with a 3 cylinder diesel engine from the VW Lupo, redesigned numerous parts using SolidWorks 3D computer modeling software, created patterns from those models and had them cast in aluminum. They use an FJ1200 5 speed gearbox. The frame is their own design.
Power output begins at 80bhp and 165 foot pounds of torque, BUT, a bit of remapping of the engine controls increases this to 120bhp and 250 foot pounds at 5500rpm! The bike weighs 450 pounds. You do the math, by my calculations that results in an ear to ear grin. The bike is not to the production stage yet and they are exploring lots of different configurations, touring, commuter, etc.

Yamaha paper motorcycle models

Want your own 50th anniversary edition of the Yamaha MotoGP bike? Yamaha will give you one, sort of, at the Yamaha papercraft site. You can download a paper foldup model and build it yourself. Want a V-Max or an R1? You can have one. These look very cool. You might figure those folks from the land of origami might come up with something like this. You need the free Adobe Acrobat reader to open the files. They come in either white or color versions and there are many pages of parts to download and fold. Complete assembly instructions are available as well, obviously, because this isn’t your average wrench and screwdriver project. I am definitely going to get one of these

Derbi DH 2.0 - Motorcycle Mountain Bike Concept

If you remember Project M85 Freeride, you’ll see the same idea in this new concept bike from Derbi, the Derbi DH 2.0, a mountain bike sized motorcycle with a small engine and very light weight. It has fuel in frame like a Buell, an automatic transmission, a 100cc air cooled 4 stroke engine, underseat exhaust, inverted fork, air monoshock out back and a dry weight of 88 pounds! That’s a lot closer to mountain bike weight than motorcycle. The DH in the name refers to downhill mountain biking. (They explain even the brand name Derbi originates from DERived from BIcycle. I didn’t know that!) And if I read things correctly, the engine can even be quickly dismounted for a fast downhill with less weight.

Suzuki Hayabusa Police Interceptor

If you’re passing through Oklahoma and you think you can just speed through the state without any chance of getting run down from behind, think again. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a little surprise for you, a Suzuki Hayabusa Police Interceptor, all nice and shiny and black and radar equipped. The OHP is set to get special training at the California Superbike School. Better slow ‘er down boys.

R-Bike Shape Shifting Motorcycle

The bike has a multi link suspension on both front and rear and is designed around a single cylinder engine. The seat, footpegs and handlebars all adjust as the frame shifts giving the rider the correct riding position for each style of bike. A nice feature is the ability for anyone to easily mount the bike with the seat in the lowest position and yet still have the ability of riding a high seat off road bike when the frame adjusts.

R-Bike Shape Shifting Motorcycle

Every motorcycle is a compromise of sorts, buy a cruiser and you can’t ride off road, buy something for the back woods and highway riding becomes uncomfortable. Erik Brinkman, an inventor and designer with IDS (Interactive Design Studios) in Victoria, British Columbia, thought about the problem and came up with the R-Bike, a shape shifting motorcycle

Roehr 1250sc - 180 HP Supercharged V-Twin

The Roehr 1250sc pre production prototype has been completed and plans are to begin production late this year. The bike is powered by a 180 hp supercharged Harley Davidson Revolution engine. This should be one extremely interesting motorcycle. I like the looks and I really like the blown Revolution engine. Final price has not been set.

Tilting V-Max Trike by Tilting Motor Works

Bob Mighell of Stanwood, WA set out to build a machine safer than a two wheeler that could still carve the turns like a bike. He rolls out his latest version at the Cycle World show in Seattle on November 30.
After years of trials with an ‘underpowered’ proof of concept machine, a three-wheeled Honda Rebel 250, Mighell (pronounced ‘mile’) has solved his power problem with a tilting three-wheeled V-Max. He replaced the fork with his own two-wheeled double wishbone suspension that tilts and banks through corners with the feel of a single wheel. But in poor traction it has not one front contact patch to rely on, but two.

Gunbus 410 Cubic Inch V-Twin Motorcycle Completed

The is complete. The monster engine placed in a motorcycle frame of comparable size looked impossible and many who saw the photos were skeptical of the bike ever being finished but I guess, Clemens F. Leonhardt is one of those persistent guys who ignores the naysayers and keeps at his work.

While most everyone else has moved on to the land of 4 strokes, there’s a group of intrepid engineers and builders in Australia devoted to the idea of building a 500cc 2 cylinder 2 stroke motorcycle, starting with the Aprilia RS250 chassis and installing their own highly engineered 2 stroke powerplant.

Honda 125cc Inline 4 Cylinder Monkey Bike

The little Honda Monkey bikes, the 50cc Z series mini bikes, are pretty popular in some countries. Some fans of the little guy really engineer very nifty modifications, like this 125cc inline 4 cylinder engine for instance. It’s so small it looks like a model but it’s a real engine and sounds great!
Not a lot of detail on their website but very, very cool.
Thanks for the tip, Aaron!

JJ2S X4 500 - 4 Cylinder 2 Stroke Concept Motorcycle

Motorcycle design often revolves around the engine. The size, shape, number of cylinders and configuration play a large part in much of what follows. What if you had an X4? 4 cylinders in an X configuration open up new design possibilities and that is exactly what we have here, not only that, it appears to be a 500cc 2 stroke! This is the JJ2S X4 500 by JJS Design. They have developed and patented a new engine and designed a motorcycle around it.

“The Machine” from Fusion Motorcycles

Remember “The Machine” from Fusion Motorcycles? Well, Will Thibeault has been hard at work on something a lot of you may find interesting, he’s designed a conversion kit that will transform your donor Buell into a custom with killer looks.
Will’s kit uses a billet T6 aluminum bolt together frame with a built in oil tank, a 60 inch wheelbase and 33 degrees of rake. The Buell Thunderstorm motor, Buell forks, Buell six piston caliper and Buell rear caliper, all come from the donor bike.

CBF means - Cheap to keep. Built to last. Fun to run

However, nothing lasts for ever and the CG 125 has now been consigned to the history books with the introduction of the new CBF125. According to Honda this new machine ‘combines the best features of Honda’s Naked and 125cc motorcycles from the past 60 years to provide the ultimate in small motorcycle style and performance’, something of a bold statement! Likewise their claim that CBF means - Cheap to keep. Built to last. Fun to run

Honda CBF 125 - CBF means - Cheap to keep

There are probably literally tens of thousands of riders who started their riding careers on the Honda CG125. This rugged, simple little machine first appeared over 30 years ago in 1976, just in time to take advantage of the changes to the motorcycle test when it moved to a two part affair.
The bike quickly found favour with the riding schools for its simple single cylinder four-stroke that was literally unburstable as well as frugal. In fact many commuter motorcyclists stayed with this long after passing their test ignoring the more sport siblings that appeared along the way.

10 tips for a Bulletproof Motocross Clutch

Your motocross clutch is the key to your bike's performance, and by extension, yours. You might have more tricks up your sleeve than anyone else hitting the dirt but if your clutch isn't up to par, you and your engine are going to be on totally different wavelengths and no translator out there can help. Let's talk about how to put the clinch on your clutch.

Japan on a folding bike

Japan on a folding bike. It seemed logical for the country that gave us Walkmans, capsule hotels, folding beds and origami.
Indeed, their word for 'folding bike' uses the same 'ori'. It's 'oritatamijitensha', which means rather prosaically 'folding bike'. But then the Japanese language (spoken, easy; written, impossible) is rarely abstract. It's largely concrete. Like the country.
Which was why I went to Shikoku. I'd been in Tokyo for two weeks and needed to breathe in.
My Brompton had proved ideal for getting round the capital, saturated as it is with train lines. I could clatter along pavements, accompanied by herds of schoolgirl cyclists in sailor suits, weaving among suited salarymen. Then, at the impeccably clean station ticket hall, my collapsible-horse magic. So you can fold a piece of paper into a crane? That's nothing! Watch as my bicycle turns into a satchel-sized modern sculpture! See the wheels nestle together like the eyes on a Picasso!

Introducing the 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa

Introducing the 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa. This iconic model returns delivering an entirely new level of balanced performance, redefining the ultimate sports class. It combines seemingly effortless acceleration, wind-cheating aerodynamics and now the three-way selectable engine mapping to suit a rider’s personal preference.
The engine is updated to reach new levels of efficiency and smooth drivability, with more displacement and broader torque throughout the rpm range, a better power-to-weight ratio and lower emissions
